Tao of Orchid Island

The Yami people — who prefer the name Tao — inhabit Orchid Island (Lányǔ, or Pongso no Tao in Tao), a small island 90 kilometres off the southeast coast of Taiwan. They are culturally and linguistically distinct from all the other indigenous peoples of Taiwan, being more closely related to the peoples of the Batanes Islands in the northern Philippines. Their material culture is extraordinary: the hand-carved wooden fishing boats (tatala and chinurikuran) decorated with carved geometric patterns and red, white, and black painted designs are among the most beautiful traditional craft objects in the Pacific region.
