Taiwan has sixteen officially recognised indigenous peoples, and each has its own language, belonging to the Formosan branch of the Austronesian language family. These languages are entirely unrelated to Chinese. Many are endangered despite government preservation efforts. They can be heard spoken particularly in mountain communities or at cultural festivals.
