The Dutch were expelled in 1662 by Zheng Chenggong, known in the West by his honorific, Koxinga （國姓爺）, a Ming loyalist general of mixed Chinese and Japanese parentage who fled the Qing conquest of mainland China. He established a short-lived Ming-loyalist kingdom in Taiwan. Koxinga is venerated as a founding figure in Taiwan, and his statue and temples dedicated to him are scattered across the south of the island. His reign and that of his son and grandson lasted until 1683, when the Qing Dynasty finally subdued the island.
